A concept pioneered by Metric Homes
You may know us from our Home Within a Home concept, a concept that was pioneered in Ottawa by Metric Homes. This concept allows two family units to live independently of each other in the same home because each dwelling has its own electrical, water and heating system. There is also fireproofing between each home for added security. From the outside, you are looking at a large single-family home that blends into the subdivision but what you are really seeing are two completely separate dwellings.
As economic and societal needs change, we’ve expanded our lineup to now include even more options to suit your specific situation. Whether it be:
- A secondary suite incl. ensuite bathroom and closet (as found in the Carson, Noah, and William designs);
- A separate main-floor bedroom/bathroom/living area (as found in the Jayce design);
- A fully fire- and sound-rated additional dwelling unit in the basement with a separate entrance (available on all plans, but pre-designed for the Carson, Jayce, Noah, and Oliver designs);
- Our original Home Within A Home concept (two independent dwelling units above grade); or
- Adding an additional dwelling unit to the basement of one of our Home Within A Home designs for a total of 3 dwelling units on a single property!
Our designs ensure flexibility, allowing you to benefit from creating an additional income stream, or living with family while maintaining the comfort and privacy of your own space.
By pooling resources, Multi-Generational families can live in a home that may be beyond their reach otherwise. Backyard amenities (e.g. decks, pools) can be shared from a cost and maintenance perspective. Older generations may not want to live in “adult lifestyle” communities and these options allow them to continue living independently while having the comfort of knowing that help is next door. Grandparents see more of their grandchildren, and parents wishing to travel have the added security of not leaving their home empty for weeks or even months at a time.
This concept offers the best of both worlds: the opportunity for quality family time while still enjoying privacy and independence. On the other hand, having an additional dwelling unit can become a great source of additional income, helping to offset the costs of your home without intruding on your space or privacy.
